2 year old Bosko, saved from cruelty, now fostered in Basingstoke

2 year old Bosko, saved from cruelty, now fostered in Basingstoke

This is what his foster carer says about lovely Bosko:
“Bosko has been with me for just over two months. He is a lovely chap, he has great manners and is very responsive to commands. He is very good around food and can be handled easily, great on the lead and has been good with my 2 dogs.

He loves to snuggle up on the sofa and have a cuddle. Bosco sleeps quietly in a crate downstairs overnight and is fine to be left for a few hours with my other dogs. He has a lot of energy and is very trainable. He has done 8 weeks of beginners obedience training and was really good. He could be good for agility as he has the energy and the playful nature.

Bosco travels well in the car and is house trained. Bosco would love other doggie company but he would be equally happy as an only dog.
Bosco is of unknown parentage but there is a wiff of bassett hound In there I think! Bosco is a small dog in height but he is quite long and quite stocky.

Bosco is untested with cats but has a chase instinct so is unlikely to he happy living with cats. Also no young children as he does
mouth slightly. Bosco has good recall generally but has can be distracted if he gets a scent as he is a hound type dog. This needs to be worked on.

Bosco originally came from Croatia and was a street dog but you would never know that now as he is in great condition and very used to the British way of life. Bosco just needs a forever home where his recall can be worked on and he can enjoy a settled long and happy life where he will give his new family years of adoration, cuddles and pleasure.

Grim - 2 year old JagdTerrier ( German Hunting Dog) Cross. In Somerset UK

Grim is a 2 year old  male. He spent first half of his life locked away in a house. One day he saw his chance and ran off with another dog from that house, his friend Sofija.

It was believed that they had gotten lost when they were found by rescuers but it is more likely they simply did not want to go back. In this country dogs are viewed as vermin and suffer the some of the worst cases of abuse you can imagine. Whether they were victims of abuse was unknown at this stage, and they were returned back to their owner as the streets really is not a place to be for any stray. Especially as dog killing for some was a business and so it was thought better they are safe in their home than on the street.

However it was later found out that the owner did not care for the dogs what so ever, and the abuse certainly was prevalent. When Grim and Sofia one day had enough of the abuse and for the first  time stood up to their owner and growled back at him when he had cornered them and was beating them both with a bat, the owner decided he did not want dogs that one day may retaliate against his abuse and he dumped them back on the streets.

The pair had no where to go, had no idea how to survive outside and the temperatures were now below zero. Grim and Sofia were found again by rescuers but this time not as healthy as before. Grim was badly wounded, Sofia was nearby and both were trembling with fear.

They had obviously been the target of a pack of dogs that would reside in the area they were dumped in. This happens a lot in Croatia as the street dogs are literally fighting starvation every day and will fight to the death for a scrap of food. New dogs entering into that area are putting their lives on the line. This is what we believe happened with these two poor dogs.

Grims' injuries were so bad that he was unable to walk for almost 2 months, as foster place is scarce in this country he was found an abandoned house where rescuers took him food and cared for him there. He was so miserable and felt so sorry for himself they brought him his friend Sofia to maybe give him the strength to carry on.

Grims' lucky break came when a lovely lady in the UK offered him a home. He settled straight away and showed how much love and affection he has and what a lovely soul he is. He has been with her for 4 months now but sadly due to personal reasons she cannot keep him. She is deeply saddened by this but wants to do what is best for Grim.

As a result of his past life Grim does continue to have problems with one of his back legs and does need controlled and balanced exercise. He will also require monitoring by a vet as occasionally inflammation can occur causing discomfort. Reports from his current vet will be available to be sent to his new vet in regards to past treatments given.

Grim is a very peaceful well mannered little dog , he gets along very well with other friendly dogs like  himself and adores human company. However because he is a German hunting dog breed we advise against him being re-homed where there are cats or other small mammals.

Eddie - Sweet little lad looking for that extra special forever home - Fostered in Staffordshire

Sweet Eddie, 2 years of age. Chipped, fully vaccinated, neutered, dog friendly and human friendly. Don't let his deafness deter you offering this sweet dog a forever home

This is the gorgeous Eddie. AAFA recently stepped in to help this little fella to find a safe and loving forever home. He will be under our charities wing tomorrow when we collect him from his current owner.

This is what they had to tell us about him
“We have had Eddie for about 2 years, he was sold to us at about 10 weeks old (via gumtree!) by a couple who had found out he was deaf and didn't want to keep him.

We have found him to have a friendly and affectionate personality, as he is deaf he follows you about so he can see what you are doing and where you are as he can't hear you. He is full of energy and likes to chase with our other dog and play with toys and loves to be fussed and stroked.

He is absolutely no problem with other dogs but hasn't really had any contact with cats or children so we can't comment on that.

He is currently on dried food - he's very food motivated and is always scavenging for food when he's out on walks. We used to let him off the lead in places not near roads but had to stop this as he would run off to find food in bins, or to play with other dogs and we had no means of calling him back. He does know sign commands for sit, stay, no and come here but could learn more.

Our other dog is a nervous and sometimes aggressive staffie and so we have struggled to manage them both, especially now he can't be off a lead. Our grown up children have also just moved away and both dogs are on their own all day during the week which isn't ideal which is why we have taken the decision to find Eddie a better home.

He's housetrained, fully vaccinated, snipped and chipped and has a passport - we took him to Southern Ireland on holiday this year so he needed one for then!”

If you could offer this sweet little guy a forever home please contact our charity adoptions@actionaidforanimals.com

BORG - 2 year old male crossbreed - on death row in Croatia

Meet Borg - the dog that has been through so much.

Finally we could take some pics of our poor BORG. He was rescued from the streets as crazy villagers wanted to kill him and were BEATING him every day.

He had some broken teeth in his mouth due to beatings, scars on his face. But even so his spirit was not broken.

Even though people made sure his life was hell on the streets he still just LOVES humans and kids. He gets along with other dogs as well. He is a gorgeous approx 2 year old Terrier-Schnautzer cross, we believe, who is looking for the best home ever!!

Borg finds himself on death row through no fault of his own. Stray and abandoned dogs in Croatia are often brutally treated and abused. A life on the streets is a miserable existence with the danger of starvation, being run down by cars (frequently deliberately), violence at the hands of people or other dogs and and suffering due to disease and lack of treatment but the dog who is picked up and taken to the pound has only 60 days and then by Croatian law they must be killed.

However, we are fortunate enough in this kill shelter to have a resident vet who is also the manager as part of our network of animal rescuers. He tries to get the dogs adopted and extends their time to do so but if the local city hall should order him to kill those who have reached their 60 days in the pound the law can't be resisted. This law is not the only danger of death in this pound, overcrowding is sometimes the cause of death and injury due to fights.

The vet does his best with the limited resources available, local volunteers are recruited to come and walk the dogs on a Saturday afternoon. This is the only time of the week the dogs can leave the pens and there can be long periods when the walks are not possible and due to the ratio of dogs to volunteers some will not get exercised at all.

These dogs have basic care but they suffer in the pound from stress, boredom, fear and sadness. They are all desperate to get out of their prison and be loved and part of a family.

DODO - 2 year old male crossbreed - on death row in Croatia

Meet Dodo

DODO is a  Shepherd Cross around 2 years young. Also another victim of the flood who spent days in the water until he was rescued. He was very lucky to be alive. At first he was not very good with other dogs but after neutering and socialising he is great now. He can run in a large pack, play with pups and other dogs. He is also children friendly. He has a very bad life before. Before the floods he was a back yard dog who never went to walks or played with other dogs or had any nice memories so far. He was just a door bell and a thing that will keep foxes away. He was an object not a pet. Now, fully recuperated and socalised he is looking for a REAL furever home.

Dodo may not have much time left as his death date is coming round soon.

SILVER - 2.5 years old male Husky/Malamute cross - on death row in Croatia

Hi, I am Silver

I am a Husky-Malamute cross saved from the flood and also horrible owners. At first I was not okay with other dogs, I used to bite them but now I am great with them. I am about 2 and a half years old. A home with no small children would be better for me and an experienced owner would be preferable as I still need to do some work and will need some training and lots of exercise. I am not okay with cats as they trigger my chase instinct. I need what all working breeds do and that is mental and physical activity to keep them fit and happy. Could you be the person for me?

JACK - 3 year old male Croatian Shepherd cross - on death row in Croatia

Hi, I am Jack

I am a 3 years old Croatian Sheppard mix rescued from the floods in Croatia this spring. I have spent all of my life chained up. I was supposed to be a guard dog for my owners house, well, at least he expected me to be one. My biggest flaw was that I was too friendly and I couldn't be a mean, vicious guard dog. I ended up chained to a pole with a small impovised roof over my head. I was fed once a day and I had access to water every once in a while.

I can say that the floods was the best thing happened to me in my life, even dough I barely survived. I had spent 3 days and 2 nights on a roof of a barn. I was starving, severely dehydrated, almost gone when somebody pulled me out of a certain death. That was indeed the best day of my life. For the first time in my life I had food, water, lots of people giving me petting and attention that I have been craving all of my life.

My owner gave me up, I was only a thing to him, expense. Every day I wiggle my tail in my box, trying to impress somebody, anybody who can give me the love for the rest of my life.

I have been cat tested and am okay with cats. I also get on well with other dogs, children and adults. I promise I'll be a good companion for a lifetime. Can you give me a chance? Only a corner of your heart and a place to call my own?
